{A Personal Note} Why Breast Cancer Awareness Is Important To Me

{Photo Credit: Our Family Archives}

Five years ago today, at around 3:30 in the morning, I received the most dreadful call of my life. My brother called to say our mom had passed away. I'd never been able to talk about it publicly until now, and even now I still find it difficult to type these words. It has been a difficult journey, not just for me, but for my family, especially my dad.

I won't go into the details, as it is a hard thing for me to do. The memories of her pain are still too overwhelming to even describe, and as I type, I'm tearing up. What I can say is that my mom was a fighter and never gave up hope, but in the end, the cancer won. Not a day goes by that I don't think about my mom, but I try and focus on the happier times, when she was strong and healthy.

If there is ever anyone I ever give credit for my start in this business, it's my mom. As many of you know, when I first started the business, the only service I provided were cakes. My mom was phenomenal when it came to cooking, but her baking skills were outstanding! Her love of baking is what inspired me to bake and create cakes. I've been fortunate to inherit many of her baking recipes, not just for our cakes, but our cookies and some traditional breads.

I wanted to take a few moments to remember her and pay tribute to the most wonderful and beautiful person I've ever known and loved.

We all have special women in our lives, so I believe it is our duty to help and promote breast cancer awareness. Please encourage all the special women in your lives to take a few minutes each day to perform a self exam. If you'd like to help in the research for a cure, I encourage you to visit one of these sites and make a donation or help promote awareness:

National Breast Cancer
American Cancer Society
Breast Cancer
Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Rose - Houston

Remember, the next life you could save could be yours or that of a loved one. Thank you for letting me share.
