Happy Holidays!!!

{Artwork Credit: A Day To Remember, Image Credit: The Peanuts.com}

Christmas is truly my most favorite time of the year! Year round, we are so consumed with work and every day life, that we forget to think about the little simple pleasures, and to spend time with family. The holidays are a great way to slow down from the every day and reflect on the many blessings received through the year. I'm reminded that I need to focus on what is truly important: My health, my family, the successes and why I'm here.

I'd like to take this time to thank each and every one of you who helped us in having a successful 2011 wish you all a wonderful Holiday, however you may celebrate it. May we all have a SPECTACULAR 2012!!!

Our offices will be closed as of today, Friday, Dec. 23rd and will re-open on Jan. 2nd. We will be checking emails on a limited basis.

Happy Holidays!!!

{Published} The Knot Magazine

{Artwork Credit: The Knot Magazine}

Dripping crystals off of floral masterpieces, cool rich tones of deep purples and pinks, offset by pewter silver set the tone for the beautiful wedding of Lan+Avi. One of my fellow photographer friends and colleague, Ben Sassani of Sassani Photography {a fabulous guy with an incredibly artistic eye}, married to sister of the bride, sent Lan my way. When I first met Lan and her fabulous sister, Thao {who by the way, was the creative soul to the beautiful stationery for Lan's wedding, oh, and also happens to own her own stationery company, Memories of Today}, over coffee, we hit it off instantly!

Transforming the hotel ballroom from a gorgeous ceremony setting to a breathtaking reception was definitely an exhilarating task. It's weddings like this that get my adrenaline going, knowing we have just one hour to re-transform a room while the guests are immersed in conversations with family and friends, while sipping on cocktails and nibbling on tasty bites. Unbeknownst to them, a room is magically transformed to WOW them upon entering.

The hard work from a great team of colleagues was beautifully captured by the fantastic Ashley Kohlleffel of Ashley K Photography. I will be sharing with you the full wedding gallery in a future post, but for now, we would love to share with you the quick feature of Lan+Avi's wedding in the Spring/Summer 2012 issue of The Knot Magazine. Enjoy!

A huge Thank You goes to the fabulous team of professionals that helped in making this wedding as beautiful and perfect for Lan+Avi.

Celebrating "Dia de los Muertos" {Day of the Dead}

Celebrating "Dia de los Muertos". What does it all mean?

{Photo Credit: A.C. Thamer via the LAist Featured Photos pool}

History:
"Dia de los Muertos"
is a time to remember and honor the deceased loved ones, with the idea that the spirits return on this one day of the year to be together with their families. Many of these celebrations take place in cities and villages throughout Mexico, though each location may have different customs and ways of honoring their dead.

{Photo Credit: Amaresh Sundaram Kuppuswamy | Daily Trojan}

I found this great site that explains it perfectly. I did take an excerpt from it, but for the full article, please be sure to visit their site.

From the beginning of time, man has felt the need to explain the mystery of life and death. Many civilizations and cultures have created rituals to try and give meaning to human existence. Where do we come from?

  • Why does life end?
  • Is there "life" after death?
  • If so, what kind of "life"?
  • Can we do something while alive so we can enjoy "life" after death?
These are some of the questions man has asked himself in order to understand our finite existence on this earth.

To the indigenous peoples of Mexico, death was considered the passage to a new life and so the deceased were buried with many of their personal objects, which they would need in the hereafter. Many times even their pets were sacrificed so they would accompany their masters on their long journey.

From pre-Columbian times, El Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico, and other Latin countries. This is a very special ritual, since it is the day in which the living remember their departed relatives.

Sometimes, when people of other cultures hear for the first time about the celebration of the Day of the Dead, they mistakenly think it must be: gruesome, terrifying, scary, ugly and sad. Nothing further from the truth, Day of the Dead is a beautiful ritual in which Mexicans happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives that have died. Much like when we go to a graveyard to leave some lovely flowers on a tomb of a relative.

Although I was born in Mexico, yet raised in Houston, I was brought up with many of our cultural celebrations. My siblings and I were fortunate to celebrate Halloween, having the opportunity to dress up in costume, knock on the neighbors' doors and ask for candy. My parents also taught us of the traditions that are celebrated every year in Mexico, as Halloween isn't really a holiday in this country. Mexico, along with other Latin American countries celebrate "Dia de los Muertos". So, a quick history lesson about celebrating this special holiday in Mexico...

"Dia de los Muertos" can be traced back to the indigenous cultures; rituals celebrating the deaths of their ancestors, for as long as 2,500–3,000 years. It was common to keep skulls of their loved ones as trophies and display them during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth.

The festival that became the modern Day of the Dead fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, about the beginning of August, and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the goddess known as the "Lady of the Dead", corresponding to the modern Catrina.

{Photo Credit: Wikipedia}

In most regions of Mexico, November 1st honors children and infants, "Dia de los Inocentes" or "Dia de los Angelitos" {Day of the Innocents/Day of the Little Angels}, whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2nd, "Dia de los Muertos" {Day of the Dead}.

Celebrate:
Celebrating "Dia de los Muertos" in Mexico is truly a joyous time. Families begin preparations of special foods in honor of those who have departed. Oftentimes, these special dishes consist of the departeds' favorite meal. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of "papel picado", flowers, candy "calaveras" {skulls} and parades.

It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on October 31st and leave on November 2nd.

In preparation of these celebrations, the families create an altar for their departed. The altars are usually an elaborate display, filled with offerings of food such as "pan de muertos" {bread of the dead}, baked in shapes of skulls and figures, "calaveras de dulce" {candied skulls}, candles, incense, yellow and orange Marigolds, also known as "cempazuchitl" and most importantly a photo of the departed soul.

{Photo Credit: Amy Irulan}

I came across the top seven locations in Mexico for celebrating "Dia de los Muertos":

Janitzio and Patzcuaro, Michoacan
Janitzio is a small island in Patzcuaro Lake and is easily reached by boat from Patzcuaro. The island is home to the Purepecha indigenous group {sometimes called Tarascans} who have elaborate "Dia de los Muertos" rituals. There are processions and music, folk dances are performed and families gather in the cemetery to spend the night chanting and singing. Perhaps the most impressive sight is the fishermen in their rowboats with torches lighting up the lake.

{Photo Credit: Guillermo Aldana, Courtesy of the Mexican Tourism Board}

Oaxaca, Oaxaca
Visitors to Oaxaca during "Dia de los Muertos" can visit colorful marketplaces in nearby villages {the Friday market in Ocotlan is outstanding}, witness vigils in a variety of cemeteries and take part in night-time carnival-like processions called "comparsas". There are also sand tapestry competitions and "Dia de los Muertos" altars set up throughout town.

Mixquic, Mexico
Mixquic, located in the Tlahuac Delegation of Mexico City {southwest of the Mexico City center} has been swallowed up by Mexico City's urban sprawl, but retains the ambiance of a rural village with strong indigenous roots. Street stalls are set up in the days before the celebrations. A procession through town with a cardboard coffin leads the way to the cemetery where a candle-light vigil will take place.

{Photo Credit: Federico Mena-Quintero}

Merida, Yucatan
In the Mayan language "Dia de los Muertos" celebrations are referred to as Hanal Pixan, which means "feast for the souls." Families gather to prepare a special seasoned chicken tamale wrapped in banana leaves {called pibipollo}, which is cooked underground in a pit. The dish is enjoyed by both the spirits, who are believed to consume its essence, and the living, who enjoy the real thing! There are also festivities in the streets and cemeteries.

Aguascalientes, Guadalajara
The birthplace of engraver, Jose Guadalupe Posada, celebrates "Dia de los Muertos" every year with the "Festival de las Calaveras" {Festival of Skulls} from October 28th to November 2nd. The festival takes place on the city fairgrounds with exhibitions of handicrafts, stands with traditional food and seasonal fruit, and varied theater productions and concerts. The grand parade of "calaveras" along Aguascalientes' Avenida Madero is a highlight of the festival.

{Photo Credit: Courtesy of Festival de las Calaveras}

Riviera Maya
Xcaret theme park in the Riviera Maya hosts an annual "Festival de la Vida y la Muerte", {Festival of Life and Death}, in honor of "Dia de los Muertos". The festival runs from October 30th to November 2nd, and includes theater and dance performances, concerts, conferences, parades and special tours, as well as special "Dia de los Muertos" rituals.

{Photo Credit: Courtesy of Xcaret}

Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas
This pleasant colonial town on the Rio Grijalva is 7 miles from Tuxtla de Gutierrez, capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas. For "Dia de los Muertos", the cemetery is decorated in a lively manner with colorful ribbons, flowers and candles. There is live music in the cemetery as families serenade the deceased on their short-lived return.

Celebrations among the different cultures is always a fascinating thing. So my question to you is: Do you celebrate "Dia de los Muertos"? Feel free to email us some pictures of the altars, sugared skulls and any other details you'd like to share to info@daytoremember.net. We'd love to see them!

{Wedding Inspiration} A Burlesque Themed Wedding!

{Written by Cortney Stanchfield; Inspiration Board Credit: Cortney, A Day To Remember}

Well hello there...it's me Cortney again and I am back to talk about an incredibly sexy wedding theme that has sparked my curiosity! :)

I fell in love with the music video "Lady Marmalade" featuring Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink, as well as Christina Aguilera's newest movie "Burlesque", also starring the amazing Cher. I thought to myself, how amazing would it be to have a "Burlesque/Moulin Rouge" themed wedding? This wedding theme is definitely for the rebellious bride that isn't afraid to step out of her comfort zone! I think it makes for a very dramatic, romantic and unique wedding! A "Burlesque" themed wedding is best suited for an evening wedding and will be sure to keep your guests talking! :)

To recreate the "Burlesque/Moulin Rouge" environment, your best bet is to find a venue that will lend itself to a unconventional feel, something on the dark and bold side. Houston lends itself to some great venues for this look: Hotel Zaza or The Majestic Metro Theatre.

To create a true "Burlesque/Moulin Rouge" vibe, you will be want to use dark rich colors {think red and black}. However, you will want to incorporate touches of gold and/or ivory, to add a touch of elegance to your special day. A great way to dress the venue: Go with black table linens, accented with some gold plate charges and props. For the flowers, use lots of red in your centerpieces. Some great flowers to use: Black Magic and Black Beauty roses. Like I mentioned earlier, for that added touch of elegance, incorporate some gold to the mix, with either gold sateen napkins or napkin rings, and lots of candles.

Not a big fan of red and black? No problem! As I mentioned before, to achieve this "Burlesque/Moulin Rouge" theme, we want rich and bold colors. Some great jewel tones you can use include dark green, royal purple, burgundy, royal blue and dark teal. This color palette will add more color to your evening but still help to create the same classic look. Some great options for your table centerpieces include the use birdcages or tall gold or black candelabras to help give you that true vintage, yet dark look. Of course, for a last detail, don't be shy and incorporate the feathers!

Now, let's chat about wardrobe. What do you wear for a Burlesque themed wedding? The ideal dress is a fitted upper body corset! Oohh la la! ;) As for the wedding dress color... that is totally up to you! You could wear the classic white wedding dress, a white dress with black or red detailing or even a complete red dress! So, how brave are you? :)

Since this wedding theme is very exciting and different, consider keeping things a secret! Planning an unusual wedding can be like creating a sculpture without knowing yet what your end result will be. Gift your guests with this unique surprise!

So what do you guys think? Are you rebellious enough to pull off such a seductive themed wedding? I am interested to hear your thoughts!

Well, like always, it has been a pleasure! Thank you for taking the time to check out my post! I am constantly working on new material, so like always, stay tuned! :)

{Wedding Planning 101} Service Charges vs Gratuity

{Photo Credit: Gary Guy Photographer, DW Photography, Kelly Hornberger Photography}

Planning a wedding can be a daunting task to couples. Learning the lingo is even more daunting. So we've decided to start our Wedding Planning 101 tips for our fabulous readers. We want to provide you with some tidbits of information that can help the wedding planning process be a more pleasant experience.

{Photo Credit: Gary Guy Photography}

So, let's start with the difference between Service Charges vs. Gratuity. What is the difference? Why is my hotel charging me a Service Charge? Do I still have to tip the hotel staff if I'm already being charged a Service Charge? These are one of the many questions we get asked by our clients.

What is a Service Charge?
A Service Charge is a mandatory and automatic {pre-determined} fee that is typically added to your hotel or caterer contract for the service personnel. Just to give you an idea: Most hotels in the Houston and surrounding areas charge a Service Charge {ranging anywhere from 18% - 24%} on their Food and Beverage {F&B} contract. A Service Charge is not to be confused with a Gratuity. In the State of Texas, taxes are applicable to the Service Charge, so please remember to include this when creating your budget.

So what is included in the Service Charge?
How the Service Charge is broken down will vary from hotel to hotel {or caterer}, so don't be afraid to ask for an itemized breakdown. In general, the Service Charge offsets the hotel/caterer’s labor and administration costs, such as dishwashing, packing for your event, travel time to and from your event, ballroom/facility maintenance and so forth. Keep in mind, the Service charge DOES NOT equate to a Gratuity; therefore, it DOES NOT cover the gratuities for the wait staff {unless specifically noted by your caterer}.

{Photo Credit: DW Photography}

Service charges are NOT commonly billed by your other vendors {ie: photographers, videographers, officiants, etc.}, as the bulk of their entire business is a service...a service you have already hired them to provide you.

When you receive a proposal from a caterer or hotel/banquet facility, you will more than likely note a price per person, and notice a "++" after the price per person. What does this mean to you? Let's say your price per person at any given Houston hotel is $65.00++. As mentioned before, your Service Charges will range anywhere from 18% - 24%, depending on the venue/banquet facility/caterer. In Houston, Sales Tax for food and beverage is 8.25%. So, how do you decipher your total? Your cost per person is $65.00 "plus" a Service Charge of, let's say, 21%, "plus" Sales Tax of 8.25%.

What is a Gratuity?
A gratuity {also known as a tip} is a voluntary amount of money given in exchange for a service performed. For example -- We typically tip our waitstaff or our hair stylist for great service. Gratuity to the staff is soley at your discretion. If you are working with a caterer, they may ask that you tip them upfront {as they do the hardest physical labor on your wedding day, and should be compensated accordingly}. In the event you feel uncomfortable providing the gratuity ahead of time, you can do so at the end of the event {or have your planner/coordinator} provide the gratuity at the close of the event {normally in the form of cash or a check}. Do keep in mind, that while Gratuities are not required, it is in good etiquette to do so.

So there you have it folks. I hope this answers most of your questions on the difference of Service Charges vs Gratuity. Stay tuned for our next Wedding Planning 101 post when we discuss the etiquette of gratuities.

Happy Planning!

{Wedding Tips} Houston We Have A Problem!!!

{Artwork & Photo Credit: B H L D N Website}

Yes, Houston, we have a problem...but a GOOD ONE! B H L D N is FINALLY here in Houston and that poses a HUGE problem on my bank account! I want to just live there and play with all the pretty dresses, all the pretty shoes and don on some GORGEOUS accessories! Yes...they have it all!

Now, let me just say that B H L D N isn't your typical or traditional wedding boutique. So ladies and gents, if you are wanting a traditional look, this may not be your cup of tea. What I have learned is that most couples believe to be "traditional" but when presented with "outside the box" ideas and looks, they get completely excited! So...the good news is, B H L D N is a place you can get excited about, get your creative juices flowing and allow you to create a beautiful and unique style perfect...just for you!

Oh..did I hear you say you've not heard of B H L D N???? GASP! Well, let me introduce you! I've provided you with a snippet off their website, just for your reading pleasure:

An understated word with significant meaning charmed us. And so began, BHLDN.

Inspired by the Dutch word for “to keep,” as well as countless tales from family and friends of the extraordinary weddings they’d been part of, we began dreaming up something new.

Our roots are with Anthropologie, so a passion for experience and creating one-of-a-kind moments runs deep. But our offering speaks more to the not-so-everyday occasions—ours is a voice that celebrates a woman’s most anticipated milestones. And one that gives tradition a twist.

We want, more than anything, to help a woman create an event that reflects her own unique perspective… to a tee. We want to give a bride that edit she’s been searching for—with heirloom-quality wedding gowns, artisanal hair adornments, footwear, and lingerie. And we want happy bridesmaids—in mix-and-match frocks with rich hues and unexpected details.

But it goes beyond the dress. Our goal, and the reason we drape, fold, bustle, and stitch, is to start a conversation with our customer—to build a resource where she can come to find inspiration and to share with those closest to her, as well as our broader coterie. BHLDN’s story is unfolding; and we’ll look to our customer for cues and guidance going forward.

There are no checkboxes. No fill-in-the-blanks. On the contrary, we think a moment should be as layered and dimensional as the woman standing within it.

Be you. Be loved. BHLDN

So, now that you are familiar with B H L D N, you can now understand my giddiness and excitement...so are you with me???

This is my favorite dress to date! Drooooool!

B H L D N invited an exclusive group of people to attend their Vendor brunch, which was held today. We were honored to be on this list and so excited to have the chance to touch and feel these pretty things...not just drool over, as I have online for a while now. :)

B H L D N officially opens their doors to Houston, tomorrow, August 18th. How exciting! I will be back tomorrow! Today just wasn't enough!

Brides and grooms...now that you are engaged, it's time to start the planning! Allow us the opportunity to guide you into the wonderful world of planning, and let's take a trip to B H L D N and have some fun!

{Wedding Tips} Honeysuckle for Spring & Summer

{Written by Cortney Stanchfield; Inspiration Board Credit: Cortney, A Day To Remember}

Hello, it's me Cortney again and I am back and excited to talk a little more about wedding trend colors. In my initial post, we introduced Pantone's Honeysuckle and its versatility with navy blue and grey for the Fall and Winter seasons. Well, even though Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons, it is time to move onto Spring and Summer.

I am sure that you newly engaged couples out there are anxiously awaiting to use this color for your 2012 wedding, so let's get started! The good thing is that Honeysuckle is such a versatile color and can be used for all seasons. Playing with colors, two accent colors that would play nicely are ivory and yellow! Imagine Honeysuckle with ivory for a romantic spring affair or pair it with a bright yellow for a flirty summer occasion!

Personally, Honeysuckle is more eye catching if you use it sparingly. Honeysuckle is a warm hue that will be sure to compliment any color you choose to pair it with; therefore, don't be scared to experiment with it and place it with a color that fits your personal style.

Forecasted for 2012: romantic wedding bouquets, so, use ivory flowers such as peonies and pair them with a light shade of Honeysuckle such as a deep pink Oriental Lily or a hot pink French Tulip. Add in small details such as pearls, creating the perfect ultra romantic bouquet. Want to go with a fun and flirty bouquet? Pair some fun yellow Billy Balls with varying pink shades of Gerbera Daisies and you will have yourself the perfect summer bouquet.

If you choose to have Honeysuckle as a major player of your color palette, then think about incorporating it into your stationery. This will be the perfect way to introduce your brave color for your wedding!

Since Honeysuckle is a really girly color, let your man have his fun with the Groom's cake, which is always the Southern tradition! This cake is all about his interests, so let him have fun with it and go crazy!

Well again it has been a pleasure, thank you again for taking the time to read my blog entry. I am super excited to start on my next blog post, so again, stayed tuned. I will be back! :)

{Wedding Tips} Honeysuckle for Fall & Winter

{Written by Cortney Stanchfield; Inspiration Board Credit: Cortney, A Day To Remember}

My name is Cortney and I'm thrilled to be the newest intern for the A Day To Remember team! I recently moved here from Historic Savannah, Georgia in October of last year therefore I will always be a Georgia Peach at heart! :) I am currently working as a Bridal Registry Consultant and I fell in love with working with Brides! They continue to make me happy and I hope to work with them for many years to come!

So, as my first blog entry, I'd like to chat a little bit about colors, to be more specific, wedding trend colors. As you may recall, Pantone declared Honeysuckle as the Color of the Year for 2011.

Honeysuckle is a stimulating reddish-pink color, a vibrant shade, that if used right and if you are brave enough, it can be used as the main color; however, it can be very striking if you let it play the role of the accent color. When I sit back and fantasize about my wedding, I see ivory and grey, but that's not to say that adding a touch of Honeysuckle wouldn't spice things up a bit! Honeysuckle is such a versatile color, and with the right mix of pink shades, it can move from light to dark.

Since summer will soon be coming to an end, let's chat about the Fall and/or Winter colors using Honeysuckle. The reddish-pink paired with a Charcoal Grey or a Navy Blue makes the perfect chic pairing for either a Fall or Winter wedding. Since these colors are so dark, use touches of the Honeysuckle to brighten them up. A perfect example would be to use Grey or Navy linens and then for your centerpieces incorporate different shades of Honeysuckle to help brighten up the table. Some great flowers you can find in this beautiful shade, and this time of year, include roses, orchids and mini calla lilies.

Using Honeysuckle as your accent color will be sure to make every detail POP! For example, a popular wedding trend for this year is hair pieces, which includes flowers, head bands and feathers. The daring bride who loves pink can make a statement by wearing a wonderful hair piece, be it feathers or a gorgeous flower. You can also use this reddish-pink to help other accessories to stand out, like a charming clutch or a snazzy pair of heels. Some other small details in your wedding, where you can use this delightful color includes that delicious signature drink or the stationery {think menu card, escort and place cards}.

So, I saved the best for last: the delectable cupcake. The most darling statement for your wedding, a sweet statement of a delicious strawberry cupcake, topped with an oh so sweet Honeysuckle colored butter creme icing. Mmmm!

What do you think of Pantone's Honeysuckle? Are you using/did you use it in your wedding? Let us know what colors you've chosen and why, as we would LOVE to hear from you!

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to read my very first blog entry. Be sure to check back with me soon, because I am excited to announce that there will be many more to come! :) Stay tuned!
